Rookie K-pop girl group ILLIT has made history by securing a nomination at the 2024 Billboard Music Awards (BBMAs), less than a year after their debut.
On November 25 (local time), the BBMAs announced their finalist list, revealing that ILLIT’s debut track “Magnetic” from their first mini album, SUPER REAL ME, is a contender in the Top Global K-pop Song category.
Making Waves in the Global Music Scene
The BBMAs are one of the four major music awards in the U.S., alongside the Grammy Awards, American Music Awards, and MTV VMAs. Nominees are determined based on performance metrics such as album and song sales, radio airplay, streaming, touring, and social media engagement.
ILLIT, who debuted in March 2024, has already left an indelible mark on the industry. “Magnetic” became the first-ever K-pop debut song to enter the Billboard Hot 100 (April 20 chart), where it continues to hold a spot on the Global Song Chart for an impressive 34 consecutive weeks.
Additionally, SUPER REAL ME broke into the Billboard 200 (May 11 chart), making ILLIT one of the few debut acts to chart on both Billboard’s primary song and album charts simultaneously. This achievement has firmly established the group as a standout rookie in the global music scene.
Accolades Beyond Billboard
ILLIT’s groundbreaking success has extended beyond Billboard. Their debut song “Magnetic” also entered the UK Official Singles Top 100 (April 5 chart), marking the first time a K-pop debut track achieved this feat, staying on the chart for three consecutive weeks.
The group was also nominated for Best Asia Act at the 2024 MTV Europe Music Awards (MTV EMA). Furthermore, ILLIT recently won the Rookie of the Year awards at both the 2024 MAMA AWARDS and Japan’s prestigious Japan Record Awards—the first K-pop girl group to receive this honor in 13 years.
A Bright Future Ahead
With accolades piling up just eight months into their career, ILLIT continues to prove their meteoric rise in the K-pop and global music scenes. Fans eagerly await the results of the 2024 Billboard Music Awards, where ILLIT could further cement their position as a global sensation.
