BTS was selected as the best pop star representing 2020 in the ‘Best Pop Star by Year 1981-2020’ announced on the 7th by Billboard on the official website.
‘Best Pop Stars of the Year’ from 2010 to 2019 include Katy Perry, Adele, Rihanna, Miley Cyrus, Beyonce, Taylor Swift, Justin Bieber, Ed Sheeran, Drake and Ariana Grande, listed in order.
Billboard said, “BTS, better known as the ‘boy band that commands the world’, has successfully toured the world over the past five years, conquered the top of ‘Billboard 200’ with three albums, and continued to expand the global fandom ARMY. They have definitely settled in the United States and became the best pop star of 2020.”
Billboard said about the digital single ‘Dynamite’ released by BTS in August last year, “It appeared on US radio broadcasts, swept through various awards ceremonies and recorded the top of the ‘Hot 100’, giving BTS a ‘best moment’ in the mainstream US music industry. They released the album ‘BE’ in November of last year as the end of 2020 and released the title song ‘Life Goes On’. This album and the single took the 1st place on ‘Billboard 200’ and ‘Hot 100’.”
In particular, Billboard introduced “BTS is the first Asian artist to be selected as the ‘Best Pop Star of the Year'” and “Because of the achievements BTS made in 2020 and the top rankings in various charts, now the audience in the US agrees that they are a superstar, and it is undeniable that K-pop has a much higher status in the mainstream music industry in the United States.”
