From ‘Butter’ to ‘Dun Dun Dance’… K-pop resounding in Tokyo

It is a part of the group OH MY GIRL’s ‘Dun Dun Dance’ that resonated during the women’s volleyball qualifying group A match between Korea and Japan at the ‘2020 Tokyo Olympics’ held on the 31st of last month. OH MY GIRL member Jiho, who sang ‘Dun Dun Dance’, said through SNS live, “I was watching a women’s volleyball match live, and ‘Dun Dun Dance’ was coming out. I thought I heard it wrong at first.”
In the women’s archery team event held on the 25th of last month, Blackpink’s ‘Boombayah’ was played. On this day, the Korean women’s archery team, which received plenty of energy from Blackpink, achieved a ‘golden hit’ and recorded the myth of winning the Olympics for the ninth consecutive year.
It is known that the selection of music for the venue is handled by the Tokyo Olympic Organizing Committee, which operates the event, and the World Federation of the relevant sport. Recently, K-pop has gained a strong response from around the world and has emerged as a popular music. An official from the Korea Sports Council told E-Daily, “In the past Olympics, western pop music, which sounds familiar to people all over the world used to play. It is very meaningful that we hear K-pops very often during the Olympics.” He said that the most popular K-pops at the ‘2020 Tokyo Olympics’ are ‘Butter’ and ‘Dynamite’ of BTS. In fact, at a press conference, Chae-Young Kang of the women’s archery team trembled at the press conference saying, “I desperately wanted a BTS song to come out, but it was a bit disappointing that the song Blackpink came out.” K-pop singers are also enjoying the Olympic effect. In fact, OH MY GIRL’s ‘Dun Dun Dance’ climbed to #6 on Twitter’s world-wide trend after the women’s volleyball match between Korea and Japan ended. An official from a music management company said, “It is an infinite honor to have the K-pop music at the Olympics, a global festival.”
