The idol group SEVENTEEN has achieved the highest position among K-pop artists in the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI)’s “Global Artist Chart for 2023,” securing second place right after Taylor Swift. This marks the highest ranking for a K-pop artist in this chart and SEVENTEEN’s third consecutive year in the top 10. The IFPI, which has over 8000 record company members worldwide, annually publishes lists summarizing trends in the music industry. The Global Artist Chart is considered an objective metric that calculates rankings based on physical album sales, digital downloads, and audio/video streaming figures, identifying the most popular artists of the year.
SEVENTEEN has steadily climbed the ranks since their top 10 debut (9th place) in the chart in 2021, moving up to 6th place in 2022, and now achieving a significant leap to 2nd place, surpassing global stars like country legend Morgan Wallen, Latin pop star Bad Bunny, and the iconic rapper Eminem. The group has established itself as a leading K-pop act, with over 16 million album sales last year and successive hits from their 10th and 11th mini-albums, “FML” and “SEVENTEENTH HEAVEN,” achieving career highs. Their unique narrative of relentless energy even in extreme conditions is becoming stronger with each release. The self-produced hit songs, which members directly involve in composing, writing, and producing, have significantly contributed to their global popularity.
SEVENTEEN has also expanded their international fanbase through world tours, attracting over a million attendees across 23 performances last year, including domestic and international fan meetings as well as their “SEVENTEEN TOUR ‘FOLLOW'” from July to December. Moreover, they are planning to continue their success with the encore tour “SEVENTEEN TOUR ‘FOLLOW’ AGAIN” in Incheon, Osaka, and Kanagawa in the upcoming months, further demonstrating their global appeal and influence in the music industry.
